What To Look For In A Doctor

Diabetes is unusual in that the doctor has a consulting role while the patient manages. Managing is a 365 day task where you make choices that will have a postive effect on your diabetes. You see your doctor possibly 3 or 4 times a year, make the most of it.

1. Remember you are number one in a team effort.

2. Mutual respect is important in developing a good relationship, expect consideration, care and compassion.

3. While all doctors are busy, he should give you the impression that he is providing you with individual attention. He listens to you.

4. A visit should have a give and take discussion with clear communication. Avoid extremes of being either too docile or demanding, this will get you off to a good start.

5. Be specific in asking questions of how, what, where, when and why. Don’t try to learn everything at one visit

6 Know what the very best care is for your diabetes and be prepared to ask for it.

7. Remember there may be trial and error in your treatment. If you are dissatisfied with your care, complain to the doctor or switch doctors, but don’t shop around needlessly.
